The new edition of "School Matters" premiered yesterday and will run for two weeks, so anyone interested will have plenty of opportunities to see and even record it.

"School Matters" airs daily at 6am, 12 noon, 6pm and 10pm on Comcast Cable Channel 99 and Verizon Channel 38.

Books on Wheels is excited to announce that we have gone beyond our goal by providing 11,665 books to local organizations in 2010. We are very grateful to have worked with over 45 organizations in providing free books and free bicycle repair this year, and are gearing up for the new year to do even more! As always, thank you for your support and dedication to our small non-profit in accomplishing this goal and continuing to grow in 2011.

As you all know, this could not have happened with out the help of all of our supporters. As we approach the end of the year, I would like to let everyone know a few ways they can help out Books on Wheels in our upcoming Spring/Summer 2011 season.

A few ways YOU can contribute to Books on Wheels:

Continued...or Damn! Tires are Expensive!!

Upon taking the advice of the first person that I spoke with after having gotten the first flat tire on the bus since owning it, I decided to try to drive the bus over 10 miles to this said random dudes shop. I made it four blocks before the second tire exploded. Frustrated and exhausting by this lack of movement already, I pull over off the main street and into a cul-da-sac, luckily being able to park in front of a fenced in club area and not someones fancy house. I got out and examined the damaged, amazed at my stupidity in thinking I could drive this bus anywhere with all the weight of the books and bikes with a flat tire.

I booked a Books on Wheels event a few months ago in Norfolk with a wonderful woman who works with the YMCA in the area. The event was promoted entirely around bicycle maintanance so I knew that it would be a busy event for fixing bikes. It so happened that this event fell on the weekend of my sister and I's 10 year high school reunion in Virginia Beach, so we decide to leave Richmond on Saturday morning, drive the bus to V.B. and stay with are parents, then head to Norfolk Sunday morning. Perfect planning!!

The bus hasn't been out of Richmond in quite some time. Between opening and working at the thrift store and being plenty busy this spring and summer in Richmond alone, traveling has not been a priority or really a financially great decision. I pride myself in taking care of the bus; its like my big blue baby, but admittedly, some things had gone unattended, which may have lead to what was a really interested and expensive weekend for Books on Wheels.

Erin and I left Richmond at a decent time on Saturday morning, feeling good about getting the drive done and chillin a little with our parents before the renunion. We make good timing down to the beach, singing along to songs and screaming to talk to each other over the roar of the engine. As we get closer to the oceanfront where our parents live, I start to realize that I had given no thought what so ever to where we would park. Normally not a big deal, but this is the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on the LAST weekend of the summer season during a music festival. And the weather is awesome so its extra busy.

I drive down the street my parents live on and stop outside of their house in a legit parking space, but the spot actually makes me uncomfortable because I immediately decide that my parents neighors will get pissed at having to even SEE the bus for an afternoon and figure I should park off their street to save my parents from some embarrassment (yeah really, they are embarrassed about my old vehicles near their house year after year). Anyway, I let Erin out of the bus while I idle for a minute as she runs inside to use the bathroom. As she comes back outside, she hears a hissing sound and notices that the right rear outside tire of the bus has a big slit in it and air is leaking out. Fast. She hopes back in the bus, tells me about the problem, and we quickly move the bus off the legal street parking and around the block closer to regular traffic where I decide to park the bus in the median between a main road and a feeder road in completely illegal parking area. Genius.

We head back the few blocks to our folks house, and, tired and hungry, I immediately get on the internet and try to find a mechanic that will do two things: Sell me a tire for the bus AND bring it to me and put it on. The first number couple numbers I call as failures, but then I reach a guy who says he does do roadside assistance but his tire guy is gone for the day (everyone does half days in the tire industry on Saturdays), so although he cant send someone out to me, he suggested that after I explained my situation to him, that it was fine to drive the bus with one flat tire, to get to him, as long as I went really slowly. Come to find out, this was probably the worst advice I have recieved in a very very long time.

Worn Again 2010 is our 7th Recycled fashion extravaganza and the latest opportunity for Richmond designers to take the Worn Again challenge.
This year 27 designers and artists have been working with a bag of cast-off clothing and materials (provided by Team Worn Again), turning them into recycled runway masterpieces! After making it past our Worn Again Jury on June 27th, The top designs will walk in our moving fashion exhibition during July's First Friday art walk at Art6.

Since it's 2005 debut in Richmond, Team Worn Again's goal has been to promote a recycled lifestyle that is innovative, creative, accessible and always fashionable! Part of this mission includes raising money for other local grass roots non-profits and strengthening positive efforts in our local community and beyond. Both Team Worn Again and Books on Wheels have shared the experience of taking our missions to New Orleans and we are proud that all proceeds from Worn Again 2010 will benefit Books on Wheels.

Books on Wheels is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that brings free books and free bicycle repair to low income communities. As a mobile operation Books on Wheels is able to take this mission beyond Richmond and around the country. By providing free books and helping educate community members about basic bicycle maintenance, Books on Wheels ensures access to valuable life-long skills that promote both physical and mental wellness. While Books on Wheels commonly works with at-risk youth their services are available to everyone. www.booksonwheels.org

We are also creating our first "Mini-guide to Living a Worn Again lifestyle". This mini-guide will feature a shopping guide that highlights businesses which foster a fabulous spirit that supports creativity, re-use and the importance of staying local. Our guide will also include tips and projects that you can use at home to infuse creative reuse into your everyday living. There will be a limited run of these guides and all proceeds from sales of our "Mini-Guide to Living a Worn Again Lifestyle" will be donated to Books on Wheels. This exhibition invites artists to deconstruct used books (that would

typically be cast-off) and use the raw materials to start a new

chapter. We are looking for work that demonstrates a balance of craft,

imagination and innovation. Pieces selected for the show will

represent Team Worn Again's ongoing mission to take recycled

creativity to the next level.

represent our mission.

After 5 years and six shows we have seen our fair share of talent and we are ready to introduce Richmond to the next level, so shred, dye, deconstruct and re-construct. Books on Wheels is very happy to have a space to call home located at 302 W. Brookland Park Blvd. Richmond, VA 23222. With this new addition to our organization, we will be able to reach more people, offer volunteers opportunities to help with our daily operations, and organize ourselves in order to grow and do a better job at providing free books and bicycle repair to the public. Our Spring/Summer 2010 season is approaching fast, and in preparing for a busy season, we want to make sure we can do the most good in our communities as possible.

Since Books on Wheels is a publicly supported non-profit organization, we rely on the generous donations from individuals like you in keeping us literally running. So, we are launching a campaign to raise $10,000 to provide 10,000 books during 2010. For each dollar donated, you are guaranteeing that a child in need is getting a new or gently used book from Books on Wheels.

I was working at the Thrift Store a couple weeks ago and a police officer came in after seeing the book box that is outside of the store. He asked me if I used to have another Book Box downtown on Broad St. I hesitantly said yes, not sure why he would want to know if I had more than one box, other than to comment that I put them on the street without permission. He asked me if I noticed that it was gone from the street corner, and I said yes, it had been gone for months. He then told me that he had it because he busted people hiding drugs in the box and removed it to keep that from reoccurring. Oops.

On Saturday, Books On Wheels set up outside of the Richmond Zine Fest to accept donations for our new Thrift Store: Books, Bikes, and Beyond and to give away great books. It was a warm and fun afternoon, a time for Shelley and I to catch up with each other and with great friends and supporters.

One of the people we got to see was Shel, a Charlottesville native who has set us up with some great events in her city. She made it by the thrift store after the zine fest, and immediately found a great old typewriter. As she was paying for her purchases, she was telling Shelley that she had her fortune read at the zine fest, and was really confused and a little worried by one prediction: at some point that day, she was going to find a bag of fingers! She and Shelley were laughing about this odd fate, until they looked down at the typewriter she was buying and realized that this mechanism, though not a bag, was full of fingers! Her prediction was right! Fate, now just another free thing offered by Books On Wheels!

"Here's a great story: I was just at the Books On Wheels Thrift Store:

Books, Bikes, and Beyond, helping Shelley and Erin install a security

system, and an elderly gentleman from the neighborhood came in.

He was looking for a coat for a 10 year old girl he had seen walking

to school this morning with no jacket. He felt bad for her, and wanted

to help. Luckily, he came to the right place; within 5 minutes, Shelley

had 3 different options for him, all under $5 and in great shape. He

wasn't sure of her size, so he bought 2. If we had any doubt about

opening the store, this kind man took care of it.

Shelley did let me know that while she has been getting plenty of women's

clothes, we are hurting for donations of men's clothing. So, gentlemen,

get correct with your wardrobe, let go of those old Levi's and Oxfords

and Izods, update your look, and hook us up in the process. Donations

are accepted from 10-6, Tuesday-Saturday at 302 W. Brookland Park Ave."

Saturday September 19th 10-5 pm

We are accepting clothing, bikes, books, housewares, and pretty much anything except for furniture. All donations are greatly appreciated and come with a tax-deductible receipt.

Also, if anyone is interested in volunteering, please email us! Now that we actually have space to work out of other than the inside of buses, we would love volunteers! If you can or are interested in sorting books, sorting clothes, pricing clothes and store items, working on/fixing bicycles, please let us know if you ware interested!

Books on Wheels is Opening a Thrift Store!

Hello Friends!

Ward and I are happy to announce that Books on Wheels is opening a Thrift Store in the Northside area of Richmond. The store is located at

302 W. Brookland Park Blvd.
Richmond, VA 23222

We will function as other thrift stores do in selling you gently used merchandise donated to us from the community, but with a few Books on Wheels specialties to look forward to! This volunteer run, non-profit thrift store will provide:

Free books! All the time, always free!

Functioning bicycles for sale. Never buy another thrift store bicycle that you can’t ride away on!

We will not be providing free bicycle repair in store, but we will be holding classes TBA that teach bicycle repair and as always, Books on Wheels will hold events in the neighborhoods with our buses so we can fix bikes during those occasions!

What we need now is support from the community to get us starting. Currently, we are asking for donations of any kind to the store before opening our doors. Also, we always need and greatly apprieicitate monetary donations so we purchase the following items that we need:

Supplies to build book shelves

Clothes Racks and clothes hangers to organize clothing donations
A Cash Register

Books on Wheels is a Richmond, Virginia based 501 (c) 3 non-profit organizations that provides free books and free bicycle repair. As a mobile operation, Books on Wheels is able to travel to many different communities in Richmond and around the country to provide our services. We work with various other organizations in order to provide to their clients as well as people in their communities. Our services are available to anyone and everyone, yet we do have a concentration in working with at-risk youth in low-income neighborhoods. Currently, we are working on occupying a space within Richmond so we can expand our operation to provide free books and offer bicycle repair classes at a particular location. Our new project will allow for more volunteer participation, as well as ability to reach more people within the community.

The little bus is being permanently parked. . .at least until we can find someone to maybe fix it, but honestly, it might be a lost cause. It has been a good run, but it just got to hard for the little bus and after having it towed a dozen times i think its time to retire.

Unfortunately, after the fundraiser, the bus broke down and we did not make it to the Robinson Theater for the block party. Sorry. Maybe RIP for real???? Five tows in the last 9 months, and probably the last 9 TIMES I have driven the bus....looks like this may be it.

Books on Wheels would like to thank all the kids that rode around today, along with Lindsey and Tracy for setting up the event. The kids donated books, raised money, and did a great job of riding bike, drinking lemonade, and eating cookies. It was really fun and exciting! Thanks for all the support!

"I came across a bike after finishing my coffee at Crossroads last week. It was tagged with a "free bike" sign and not being one to pass up a deal, I threw on my rack and drove it home. A second look at this bike and I knew I had no use for it. I am happy with my reliable Giant and not looking for another hobby. I had to find another home for it and that home is Books On Wheels. They will put it to much better use than I would. I know that there are garages full of unused bikes out there doing nobody any good. Find a new home for your old bike and get some garage space back for your trouble. Read more about Books on Wheels below.

Shelly Briggs runs the bicycle side of things and Ward Tefft of Chop Suey fame takes care of the books. Currently operating out of a bus and they are looking for a space to establish a free bookstore and bicycle repair center. Books on Wheels will be featured on CBS 6 News Virginia This Morning on Tuesday August 4th for 5 minutes between 9-10 am. Yes!!!! Last year we did this and Bill Bevins interviewed us! A local celebrity!!! He has his own billboards! This is going to be awesome!
